Kingdom consultation on foreign relations on St. Maarten

ORANJESTAD - On April 29 a meeting will take place in St. Maarten between the prime ministers of Aruba,  Evelyn Wever-Croes, of Curacao, Eugene Rhuggenaath, of St. Maarten Leona Marlin-Romeo and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands Stef Blok. 

A crucial point on the agenda is the Venezuelan crisis and its impact on the islands.

Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes will bring forward the huge impact of the crisis on the Aruba community. The amount of asylum requests has increased substantially, however it also demonstrates that the majority of asylum seekers are misusing the asylum procedure to stay on the island. The Venezuela situation is very difficult and the Aruba government understands and want to help as much as possible. Nonetheless the government must first address the crisis at home. The island’s social, economic and financial problems are considerable.

Contrarily to criticism, Aruba adheres itself to international human rights treaties and respects the right of the persons detained who are awaiting clarity on their stay on the island. 

Besides the topic of Venezuela the topic of visa for Aruba and international commercial relations will also be discussed.

The prime minister of Aruba will return on the island this Tuesday, whereas Mr. Stef Blok will be on the island on Thursday to address some bilateral issues.
